Anything that has a mass and takes up space is made up of atoms.

INTRODUCE:
Meet the parts of the atom. Protons are always positive and electrons are the opposite. Whereas, the neutrons choose to not pick a side.
LOCATE:

COMPARE:
Which one do you think weighs less?
Imagine holding the bowling ball in one hand and the feather in the other.
The weight of the feather is almost nothing compared to that of the bowling ball.

The same is true for the proton, neutron, and electron.
The electron has a much smaller weight that it is almost nothing compared to that of the proton and neutron.
THINK:
Which part of the atom has the greatest weight? The electron cloud is mostly empty space whereas, the nucleus contains the heavier protons and nucleus. Most of the mass of the atom is at the center.
PRACTICE:
Directions: Play the matching game below to hep you test your knowledge on the parts of the atom. Try again to beat your best time!
CONNECT:

How small are atoms?
You cannot see atoms, so to best understand its size would to imagine and compare it to objects you are familiar with.
Imagine the following:
REFLECT:
In your portfolio, add all the vocal words you just learned. You can add visuals to help you remember the meaning and characteristics of each.
Then, complete the following activity:
